Why Self-Awareness is Key

If you search for "self-awareness" on the internet, you'll find many different definitions. To me, it not only means being aware of your own thoughts and feelings but also of how your actions and words affect everybody around you.

What Self-Awareness Doesn't Look Like (What Not to Do)

Examples from my own experience...

1. Chat with your friend across the room while students are testing.
2. Walk with your 8 million friends side by side in the narrow school halls.
3. Suddenly stop walking in the middle of the school hallway during a busy passing period.
4. Bounce your foot against your desk during a physiology quiz.
5. Take seconds at a potluck before others get their firsts.
6. Interrupt a student (while lecturing them about slowing down and letting others finish their sentences).
7. Slide into a chat circle and stand in front of somebody else, cutting them out.
8. Park a grocery cart in the middle of the Costco aisle while you check out the produce on the opposite side of the store.
9. Only talk about yourself in a conversation.
10. Chat with your friend across the table at a group study session.
11. Invade somebody's personal space (while constantly sniffling and sneezing).
12. Talk bad about a college somebody else is applying to.
13. Plan something and cancel it last minute, getting somebody's hopes up only to absolutely crush them.
14. Ask permission to post pictures of friends only to post them anyways because they didn't respond fast enough.
15. Stop your car in the middle of the street to talk in your car with a friend on the sidewalk.
16. Listen to music on your device without earbuds in a public setting (like on an airplane).
17. Let your dog off their leash in public settings without careful supervision.
18. Not say "thank you" after asking somebody for a favour.
19. Leave trash on the ground after lunch for the custodian to clean up.
20. Throw banana peels at other students.

So...why should you practice self-awareness?

Because those who don't make everyday life chaotic and frustrating.

Bao agrees.
